Position: First Nation Representative  – North                           Reports to: First Nation Representative Lead

Term: Contract – Full-Time                                                                Salary Range: TBD

Department: Child Welfare and Family Services                       Location: Fort Albany

Hours: 35 hours per week

Summary

The First Nation Representative under the direction of First Nation Representative Lead will be responsible for acting as a representative of Chief and Council when they are unable to attend courtroom proceedings. The First Nation Representative will also provide support to individuals and families who are involved in child welfare proceedings.

Duties and Responsibilities

·         At the direction of the First Nation Representative Lead, function as representative of Chief and council when they are unable to attend courtroom proceedings.

·         Read prepared documents.

·         Present documents to the courts on behalf of Chief and Council.

·         Attend court proceedings related to the Band as required.

·         Function as a support to Band members who must attend court proceedings relating to child welfare.

·         Maintain a supportive and empathetic demeanor to Band Members and their families.

·         Maintain strict confidentiality.

·         Behave in a professional manner when acting as a representative.

·         Uphold applicable obligations under privacy, child welfare, and other relevant legislation and related FAFN policies.

·         Consult with Chief and Council regarding court proceedings.

·         Maintain a log of activities that are participated in on behalf of the Band.

·         Maintain client relations.

·         Refer families to community resources.

·         Submit month end reports to supervisor.

·         Provide home visits when required.

·         Other duties as assigned or as reasonably required for the achievement of the above.

·         May be required to travel and to temporarily work at other locations, including and not limited to other FAFN offices.

 

 

Qualification Education Requirements

·         Bachelor of Social Work or Social Services Worker Diploma or willingness to attain.

·         A strong understanding of First Nations’ cultures, values and history required.

·         Courtroom experience an asset.

·         Working knowledge of provincial and federal laws and terminology.

·         Superior organizational skills.

·         Strong public speaking skills.

·         Valid Class G Driver’s Licence.

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·         Able to work independently and as part of a team.

·         Able to liaison with a variety of people.

·         Ability to speak and understand the Swampy Cree an asset.

·         Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.

 

 

Work Conditions

·         Overtime may be required.

·         Travel may be required.

·         Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

·         Courtroom Setting.
